The Apostles preached to and handed on the New Testament directly to the Early Church Fathers. This is why Christianity has seen them as reliable. Some Protestants dispute positions that have been held from the very beginning, such as Baptism. This leaves you in a difficult position if you want to cherry-pick and accept their witness as reliable on other important issues such as the New Testament canon.
