Sega's Zaxxon wasn't just another arcade shooter—it was one of the first games that truly made players stop and stare. With its groundbreaking isometric perspective, smooth action, and futuristic visuals, Zaxxon looked unlike anything else in arcades during the early 1980s.

In this video, I take a deep dive into the history of Sega's groundbreaking shooter, exploring how it was developed, why it became such a landmark arcade title, and what made its gameplay so addictive. From judging altitude using shadows to navigating deadly fortresses and blasting enemy fighters, Zaxxon introduced ideas that felt years ahead of their time.

I also cover Super Zaxxon, the enhanced sequel that cranked up the speed and difficulty, along with the many home conversions that brought the arcade experience to living rooms. We'll discuss the Atari 2600, Intellivision, and ColecoVision versions, as well as Zaxxon's Motherbase 2000 for the Sega 32X, a failed attempt at retro reimagined.

Along the way, I'll share development history, fun facts, personal anecdotes, gameplay analysis, and a closer look at the impressive graphics and technical achievements that helped make Zaxxon one of Sega's defining early arcade hits. At the end, we'll take a look at the TV commercial for the game, the first for an arcade title. Whether you grew up feeding quarters into the arcade cabinet or discovered Zaxxon through its home ports, there's plenty here to enjoy.
