ABC and the National Audubon Society present a documentary about two endangered American birds of prey. The program was filmed in the Snake River Canyon (Idaho) where the predatory species still enjoy some freedom. Nell Newman, 12-year-old daughter of the Paul Newmans (Joanne Woodward), and Morland Nelson, soil conservationist and mountaineer, explore the little-known world of the birds. Joanne Woodward narrates.

""The Eagle and the Hawk" was written for a television show that I did with my old friend Rogert Riger. The show starred... Morley Nelson. Morley lives in Boise, Idaho, and knows more about birds of prey than any man in the world. The song came as a result of his work with these birds, his concern for them. He would mend their broken wings, take care of the young if the parents had not returned to the nest, and he did a lot of research on how to keep eagles safe when they build their nests on high power line structures. I realized that Morley's just a wonderful man, and to this day the song is one of my favorites. It's a very powerful song in a very positive way... Oh, I love to fly like an eagle."
