In Dutch, the length of the vowel can completely change the pronunciation (and sometimes the meaning!)

man = man 👦
maan = moon🌙

vis = fish 🐟
vies = dirty🧳

zon = sun ☀️
zoon = son 👦

A short vowel sounds short and sharp.
A long vowel sounds longer and more open.
