The Durbin Rocket: Heisler #6 8-6-2021. On the final year of the Durbin and Greenbrier Valley Railroad's famed "Durbin Rocket," we made a last minute trip to West Virginia to see and ride this amazing train.
The power for this trip was Cass Scenic Railroad's Heisler #6. It was built in 1929 by the Heisler Locomotive Works as a three truck "Heisler" for the Meadow River Lumber Company where it hauled logs until the 1960's when it was sold to the newly formed Cass Scenic Railroad. 6 would haul many excursions up and down the Cass Scenic Railroad until 2015, when it was moved to Durbin to operate on the Durbin Rocket. This was necessary because the Climax that normal runs on the Rocket was down for massive repairs. 6 will be brought to the Cass Scenic Railroad after the last Durbin Rocket excursions are over where it will receive necessary repairs.
*Just in case your were curious about the whistle, it was wearing an MD replica K5LA 5 chime whistle. The crew member friend of the owner told me the classification.
*On a side note, to any railfans who are upset that we didn't shoot the Nottingham Curve, we tried. However, we were turned off by the sketchy bridge over the river and the massive amount of signs that say do not enter.
Special shout-out to the crew of the Durbin Rocket. Engineers: Ross and Matthew, and conductor Julius.
Enjoy the sights and sounds of Cass Scenic Railroad Heisler #6 on it's last season running the Durbin Rocket!
