A lot of referees build dungeons as a chain of encounters and then wonder why exploration feels flat. In this video, I break down the difference between encounter design and environment design, and why classic B/X dungeons often feel more alive because of it.
This is really about a shift in prep. Instead of asking what happens in each room, start by asking what the place is, how it works, who uses it, and what pressures it puts on the party. Once you do that, the encounters start feeling like they belong there.
If you run B/X, OSE, Labyrinth Lord, Swords & Wizardry, or general old-school fantasy, this is one of those design ideas that can clean up your prep fast.

![Your Players Are Breaking These D&D Rules (And You Dont Even Know)
The B/X rulebook tells you when to roll. It doesnt tell you what to do when a player waits to hear the result before deciding what theyre doing — or argues every ruling mid-combat, or changes their action after the dice land. Thats combat etiquette. And nobody printed it.
In this video I break down the unwritten rules that keep OSR combat fast, decisive, and fair: declaring before you roll, making decisions at the speed of a fight, why the referees ruling stands, and why the dice are not a starting point for a counteroffer.
This video is part of a collab with Greyhawk Grognard and JoetheLawyer — all three of us are covering combat etiquette from our own angle. Links in the description. We wont agree on everything. Thats fine.
