In July of 2011, 55-year-old Philip Contos joined a protest against motorcycle helmet laws in Syracuse, New York. He was one of 550 people in the anti-helmet law rally organized by the Onondaga chapter of American Bikers Aimed Towards Education. As the rally wound its way through Onondaga, Contos hit his brakes, causing his motorcycle to fishtail and lose control.
