If you've ever traveled to the Balkans, you've probably come across the signature drinks of the region; Rakija. Going by many names such as pálinka, țuica, or szlivovitz, this alcoholic beverage is a staple of countries such as Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia, Romania, Montenegro, Hungary, Greece, Albania, and even Turkey. So much so that its invention has played a vital role in these countries' history. From the arrival of the Roman Empire to the arrival of the Turks & Ottomans, rakija has played a vital role in the resistance movements & revolution against Ottoman oppression & liberty. However, it has also has many negative effects such as fomenting a culture of alcoholism & alcohol consumption. This is the story of the Balkans & its drink.
