Co-commissioned by Carnegie Hall, Jerod Tate’s “Abokkoli’ Taloowa” (“Woodland Songs”) draws from Tate’s Chickasaw heritage, translating traditional Native vocal music into a modern string quartet inspired by woodland animals from his Southeastern homelands. It weaves together Chickasaw melodies, rhythms, and musical structures throughout—sometimes emerging with clarity, sometimes absorbed into the quartet’s texture.
