Silent, short video shows the X-3 taking off and flying over the dry lakebed at Edwards Air Force Base. With its futuristic long, sleek fuselage, the X-3 was expected to achieve above Mach 3 speed. However, due to underpowered engines it struggled to even make Mach 1. Although the program was terminated in 1956, valuable data was obtained about the use of titanium, inertial coupling, and improvements in aircraft tire technology. Credit: NASA
