Cain’s novel is underrated and not the mere rehashing of The Postman Always Rings Twice that some claim. However the film adaptation evolves every aspect of the story into something truly magical. It remains one of the finest screenplays ever written.

If youre looking for action in the West look no further than to the creator of Zorro to fulfill that desire. Bold Venture Press has released this nice print on demand reissue of this novel originally released in West magazine in 1942. It is available at a very low list price and frequently dips to a supremely cheap price on Amazon through their CreateSpace program. Bold Venture lists some of their print on demand books on Amazon so it helps to sometimes check their Amazon listings for deep savings. This is a must for all pulp and western fans and I have a crazy desire to read every McCulley story after devouring his legendary Zorro stories in the Bold Venture reprint series. His influence is massive yet only a fraction of his pulp output has been collected and reissued. This is a perfect way to try out one of his non-Zorro stories and get one heck of a gritty fun Western to boot...all at a very low price. The other joy of reading this book is that you can literally picture the film version in your head as you go along. Of course being a pulp novel and not a 40s film means McCulley can get away with enormous action, a realistic tone and a pretty high body count.
