William Smedick’s professional journey will begin with a focus on first-generation college student challenges. Leadership concepts of scaling and empathy will be applied through examples.

Using a competency model, two documents authored by the presenter and published in the book “Exploring Leadership: For College Students Who Want to Make a Difference” will be used to frame the lecture.

The competency model will be used to describe his most recent social entrepreneurship curriculum development and to highlight the student leaders among us. Developing a mission statement and articulating an inspiring vision that allows all members of the organization to feel valued and motivated is a recognized leadership competency, exemplified by Dean Schlesinger. Systems thinking—the ability to understand and successfully lead complex organizations—will be illustrated through the example of Johns Hopkins University President Ron Daniels.

Additional essential leadership competencies will be highlighted throughout the lecture, with role-model examples from across the Center for Leadership Education, Whiting School of Engineering, and Johns Hopkins University communities. Eight essential competencies will be discussed.
