This summer I spent a month exploring the rugged mountains of northern Italy in search of the wildest, most dangerous mountain hut I could find. Deep in the Brenta Dolomites lies Rifugio Alimonta — perched high in a glacial amphitheater, surrounded by sheer cliffs, icefalls, and one of the most dramatic landscapes in the Alps.
Why is it called Italy’s most dangerous hotel? Because beneath its serene beauty lies real danger. 2025 marked one of the deadliest summers on record in the Dolomites, with melting glaciers, unpredictable storms, and record-breaking accidents claiming the lives of climbers and hikers.
Join me as I hike across via ferratas, scale exposed ridgelines, and spend the night suspended between ice and sky — uncovering what makes this hut both breathtaking and terrifying.
