The names Norman Bates, Buffalo Bill, and Leatherface are synonymous with some of the most terrifying characters in horror film history… Each one is a disturbing figure who commits appalling acts against fellow human beings, so shocking and monstrous that it seems impossible they could have been inspired by reality. And yet, they were.
While none of these characters is a direct recreation, all of them draw heavily from the life and crimes of Edward Theodore Gein. His twisted nature, his warped personality, and the gruesome way in which he carried out his murders left a permanent scar on American culture, seeping into fiction and shaping modern horror.
