The Diplomat: Why Rufus Sewell Wanted Change. Rufus Sewell reveals why he wanted Hal Wyler’s story disrupted rather than letting the character settle into a predictable role.
Speaking with Collider about Netflix’s The Diplomat Season 3, Sewell says he would rather have Hal killed off than see him remain in a static “choose your player” position. That’s why the major change to Hal and Kate Wyler’s dynamic brought him “waves of relief”: it created new problems while allowing the series to approach their existing relationship from a completely different angle.
Sewell also explores the darker dimension of Hal, explaining why he avoids defining exactly what the character is capable of. He discusses the compromises Hal may accept in order to maintain access and influence—and the danger of a guiding principle becoming a subconscious justification for going further than intended.
The actor also takes us inside his process, from studying political figures and listening to political podcasts to finding the physical structure of a scene. Despite all that preparation, Sewell says the final step is throwing it away, staying present, and making Hal’s decisions believable to himself, even when the character may be deluding himself.
