After a decade of teaching, I’ve noticed two distinct attitudes people can take as learners of bass (or anything else):
“Give Me The Knowledge!” - these people rely on the teacher to present them with information
Knowledge Seekers - these people take initiative and actively seek information themselves, using teachers to assist them in their self-directed learning process
It’s natural to be in the “Gimme The Knowledge” camp when you first start, since you’re barely even aware of all the things you don’t know, and you might not have a clear vision of what you want to learn or accomplish yet.
But the trick is that all the musicians you look up to eventually became Knowledge Seekers, and started learning by taking full responsibility for their curiosity and desire to learn. They hungrily pursued information wherever they could find it until they found what they were looking for.
So if you want to be like your idols, you may have years of practice ahead of you… but you can also shift to their mindset right now, by taking initiative and becoming a Knowledge Seeker!
