The difference between the Gifts of the Spirit and the Fruit of the Spirit, is similar to the difference between a Christmas tree and a Fruit tree. The gifts under the tree are not earned, they are there by the Grace of God, but Fruit is cultivated in our lives as we walk in intimate fellowship with the Lord. Both the gifts and fruit are important, but don't seek to operate in the Gifts of the Holy Spirit without cultivating the characteristics of the Fruit of the Spirit.
"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control..." - Galatians 5:22-23
