Is there a sinister figure hiding in one of Wales’ most famous paintings? In 1908, Sydney Curnow Vosper painted Salem, an iconic depiction of Welsh piety and traditional life. But for decades, a chilling urban legend has persisted: that the Devil himself is hidden within the folds of the lead character’s shawl.
In this video, I visit the real Salem Chapel in Pentre Gwynfryn to separate myth from reality. I explore the origins of the "Devil in the shawl" legend and pay my respects at the final resting places of some of the people captured in the frame, including the central figure, Siân Owen.
