The transition to supersonic flight required unprecedented courage, intuitive engineering, and rigorous flight test discipline. Drawing from the propulsion legacy established by Frank Whittle and realized in operational service by the Gloster Meteor and Hawker Hunter, designers paired extreme aerodynamics with Rolls-Royce Avon power.
At the heart of the project was naval aviator Peter Twiss, whose carrier background instilled the razor-sharp reflexes needed for experimental flight. The FD2 represented a radical departure from conventional layout: its thin delta wing required ultra-narrow undercarriage gear that rotated into the structure upon retraction, while fully engine-driven hydraulic actuators controlled all flight surfaces without manual backup. Forward visibility during landing proved so restricted that engineers devised a drooping nose mechanism, allowing the cockpit to pivot downward ten degrees.
Flight testing at Boscombe Down revealed extraordinary performance alongside severe peril. During an envelope expansion run at 30,000 feet, an unexpected engine flameout forced Twiss to glide forty miles back to base without engine power, surviving on limited hydraulic accumulator pressure to bring the jet down in a high-speed belly landing. The airframe survived, paving the way for supersonic speed trials.
On March 10, 1956, Twiss flew the FD2 over a surveyed course along the Sussex coast. Navigating within strict 300-foot altitude corridors at 38,000 feet, the aircraft exceeded 1,132 miles per hour, making Britain the first nation to officially surpass the 1,000 mph threshold in level flight. The achievement electrified crowds at the 1956 Farnborough Airshow and drew French aeronautical engineers from Dassault to low-altitude test flights near Bordeaux.
When the 1957 Defence White Paper curtailed British military interceptor projects, the FD2 found a second life. Reconfigured into the BAC 221 with extended landing gear and an ogival curved wing, it generated the critical low-speed and transonic data required to build the Concorde supersonic airliner.
