Upon the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, at an event Tuesday Brookings fellows Andre Perry and Kathryn Dunn Tenpas discuss how the document, a treaty of sorts, has been used throughout history to advance civil rights movements. Perry says today’s political strife is somewhat the result of, or the “bad fruit" of, Americans not understanding the principles in the nation's foundational documents. The goal of civics education is to advance democracy.
