THE DAY OF THE KILLER TORNADOES [1975]: The "Super Outbreak" of tornadoes on April 3-4, 1974 was a terribly impactful severe weather event for many generations effected in the decades that followed. Hundreds of people fell victim to the winds, thousands more sustained injury from the 148 tornadoes that swept through the Midwest, East and Southeastern United States in under 18 hours. The most recent historical comparison to this tornado outbreak are the events from April 27, 2011. Brandenburg, Kentucky, Cincinnati and Xenia, Ohio, Guin and Huntsville, Alabama are among the many widespread localities visited in this film through original motion picture photography and reenactments.
Typically shown at Civil Defense and weather spotter training meetings in the 1970's and 1980's, this film was a follow up by the producers of the film 'A Lady Named Camille' [1970] that chronicled the August 1969 Cat-5 hurricane Camille in Mississippi.
On a side note, WHAS-AM helicopter traffic reporter Dick Gilbert was the first to broadcast a live audio report of a developing tornado from a helicopter via radio. A dramatization of that event is also recreated with Dick Gilbert within this film.
The Day of The Killer Tornadoes is public domain by this point and has been sampled by countless television newscasts, programs and documentaries since its release to the public in 1975.
