Everything changed on **July 4, 1776**.
On this day, the Continental Congress adopted the **Declaration of Independence**, announcing that the thirteen American colonies were no longer under British rule.
The document, primarily written by Thomas Jefferson, declared that all people are created equal and possess unalienable rights, including life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Although the Revolutionary War was already underway, the Declaration gave the American cause a clear purpose and laid the foundation for the United States.
More than two centuries later, July 4th remains America's Independence Day and one of the most significant dates in world history.
