Day 5 brought renewed joy from my low point of my hike. Stunning views and chilly temps accompanied me to Cottonwood Pass where my friend who began the hike with me came to pick me and my wet gear up for a well deserved night at a hotel in Beuna Vista.

A cinematic (I’m not running my mouth) Adirondack hike up Algonquin across Boudary and up Iroquois so we could Bushwhack to Shepherds Tooth. Crossing NYS’s second highest peak and another high peak is challenging enough. The Bushwhack to Shepherds Tooth is difficult because of the thick krumholtz and because of the fragile alpine vegetation.
One footstep can kill vegetation that has taken decades to grow.
We carefully followed the faintest of herd paths taking extreme caution to step on the rocks, or the existing faint herd path. This is not an easy bushwhack and is not for the inexperienced hiker.
It is extremely important to understand that you should never step on the alpine vegetation. Turn around and backtrack if needed to stay on rocks, solid surface or existing path. I cannot stress this enough.
It was a hot day, and I began suffering from heat exhaustion snd dehydration. I recovered after getting above tree line. It is important to pay attention to your body and be able to know when you may be in trouble.
All in all a challenging yet rewarding hike with my friend!")
