The Day After Judgment, the sequel to "Black Easter," is an oddball genre piece that mixes hardcore theology with Doom-esque action horror. I've not read a book like it. Blish is an underappreciated author who deserves a second look. It is part of Blish's "After Such Knowledge" series, which is regarded as one of his legacy pieces.

Protector by Larry Niven is an uneven, slightly dated first contact novel from the seventies. It pales in comparison to Mote In Gods Eye but has a small handful of compelling ideas to offer. A quick and rewarding-enough read.")
