This topic is close to my heart because it affected me so deeply and so personally for so many years. Instead of enjoying the journey (I was learning Spanish), I was OBSESSED with passing as a native speaker. This caused so much anxiety, constant fear of making mistakes, and ultimately kept me QUIET as I avoided speaking and practicing the language. In short, it was completely counterproductive. I wish someone would have told me that our accents change and shift naturally as we practice and improve our skills. I wish someone had shown me that I didn't need to focus on "passing as a native" at all... that it was more important to find my own identity in the language as I blended my cultural backgrounds and linguistic abilities. But no one knew I was struggling. It was a silent battle and took me YEARS to overcome. So, if you are going through anything like this, I want to say... having a language role model you can imitate and learn from is an EXCELLENT strategy for perfecting your pronunciation. But don't ever get so caught up in imitating some one else's voice that you fail to find your own. Ultimately, I DID learn how to "speak like a native". However, now I know you can achieve that WITHOUT all the anxiety. You can enjoy the journey, have fun as you go, and CHOOSE how you want to sound. Your voice is your instrument. You can absolutely learn how to play it well, and then share it with the world. And if you want my help with this, just make sure you are on my email list so you know when enrollment opens for my programs and courses (you can sign up at englishfulltime.com ). My team and I have helped THOUSANDS of English learners find their voice and confidence in English, and we would love to help you make that breakthrough, too! Wishing you all the success in the world in this new year!!
