Luigi. Everyone's second favorite Mario brother! Some people love him for his unique personality, others just like the colour green.

Starting his life as just green Mario, he's slowly gotten more appreciation over the years, and gotten his own games, such as

Dr Luigi

New super Luigi u

Oh yeah, and Luigi mansion too. I think its fair to say that he has a lot of fans, and yet he's still quite disregarded on Nintendo's behalf. Sure he's got some games, but most of them are spin-offs, and he could have so many more, like Or

Back in 2013, Nintendo saw a declining trend in profits and must've decided it was because there wasn't enough Luigi or something and wanted to do something about it. Just kidding, they claim it was to celebrate 30 years of green Mario existing. They did so by creating a whole year 'dedicated' to him.

What did this 'year of Luigi' consist of? Well the most prominent part of the celebration was Luigi's mansion: Dark Moon, a sequel to the original luigis mansion, finally! People seemed to really enjoy this, but I wouldn't be surprised if the game wasn't originally made to be for the celebration, instead it happened to line up right. Great game!

THIS JUST IN: OTHER COMPANIES MAKE CONSOLES TOO, WHICH IS BAAAD NEWS FOR NINTENDO. OUR REPORT SUGGESTS THAT SONY AND XBOX HAVE MADE BETTER SYSTEMS WHICH ARE MORE POWERFUL AND LESS GIMMICKY. PEOPLE ACTUALLY SEEM TO LIKE THEM, AND HAVE PROBABLY ALREADY OUTSOLD THE WII U. OUR PREDICTIONS FORESEE THAT NINTENDO IS F**CKED

Ah sh*t, did they have to do it on Luigi's birth year? Come on!

it wasn't a very profitable time for Nintendo, as the Wii u was so mediocre and hard to understand that people just thought it was an add-on for the Wii, and why would people pay so much for a controller with a screen? It's wasn't just the fact that consumers were drawn to the other consoles, but they were actually deterred from buying a Wii u

Furthermore, the money they put into this celebration definitely made things worse. Here's why:

Things just weren't profitable

If you look at the things they released to celebrate, you'll question how it actually benefited Nintendo. Luigi merch that was basically free through club Nintendo points were released.this included a year of Luigi coin, the year of Luigi sound selection containing 30 songs from Luigi's mansion and Mario and Luigi dream team, a year of Luigi poster, and more. They certainly didn't gain them any money, as the consumer only really payed for shipping costs. Nintendo still had to manufacture these products.

What else was there? Luigi bros in super Mario 3d world? It might be a neat addition, however i only remember ever playing it once, lets check it out and see what it was like…

Huh, well.

I can't imagine this addition resulting in more people all of a sudden wanting to buy the game, or a Wii u
Unfortunately, it didn't improve the sales and it also cost them to implement it, resulting in unnecessary money being spent.

As for other things they released, there was also

The only ways in which they could earn money was through the games they sold, such as Dr Luigi and Luigi's mansion. Other than that, it was a costly endeavor, and it definitely showed

Paired with the dwindling sales, Nintendo struggled and failed to break even that year, and made a loss of 46.4 billion yen, or $456 million. Making it one of only 3 years where the company had lost money
It's actually a shock that Nintendo put money into some of these things, like, there was clearly a lot of effort involved, so why not make things meaningful.. or profitable…

Due to the terrible year for Nintendo, Luigi's big break never happened, and his year will now be forever synonymous with a great loss for Nintendo. What's worse it that during this year Danny Wells, the first man to give Luigi his voice outside the games - in the super Mario bros super show passed away. It's clear that while this may have been the year of Luigi, it was certainly not Luigi's year. He failed Nintendo, and it shows why he'll always be number 2. He's just not as cool as Mario…
