The poem uses the allegory of a gruesome play to depict human life as a tragic and pointless struggle controlled by unseen forces, which ultimately ends with the inevitable and horrifying victory of death. A play watched by weeping angels shows humans as "puppets" chasing an unattainable "Phantom," until the monstrous worm, symbolizing death, appears to devour them all, making it the true hero of the tragedy of man.
