We perform this song regularly over at twitch.tv/michelleheafy if you want to hear it live 🦊

It's been entire years since I made a new VGM lyric cover. Four years to be exact. Obama was still president wtf... Sheik's theme was the last one (not counting Corridors of Time redux in 2017). And here I am on your doorstep again, trying to make you feel sad for a fictional, anthropomorphic fox named Fox.

So I guess I haven't really said this publicly before, but Star Fox is one of my favorite video game franchises ever and I've *always* wanted to do a song from the series. SF64 was such a huge game for me and I think the whole world/story of that game and the SNES version is just so cool and has so much potential. The characters have tons of depth and camaraderie and you as a player inevitably develop such strong bond with them. It kills me that Nintendo has let the series lapse. Thankfully we have talented folks like @AFoxinSpace out there that believe in it. When I was a lad, Star Fox got me interested in aviation which led to me becoming a pilot later in life. I could go on about it for ages.

I first conceived of this cover/lyrics way back in 2015, but shelved it. I knew I wanted it to be centered around Fox reconciling the loss of his father. Fox is depicted as a strong leader to his team, but we don't see him awake at night with the radio on hoping his father's voice will once again come through the speaker. I thought it was an interesting (and depressing lmao) theme to explore. The menu music from SF64 is the literal embodiment of bittersweet nostalgia so I thought it fitting to set these words to.

I used my good ol' Yamaha DX7 for the synths on this (not a plugin, the real deal!) and my Fender P-bass. I also have been experimenting with a VST called "chipsynth SFC" lately and used it to get sounds straight out of SF SNES for the background arpeggios. Overall, I'm happy with how this song came out. I tried to be experimental with the video and break loose from my usual style a bit. You may notice that the take I used for the vocals is all one consistent shot with no cuts or shots of instruments. Not sure what prompted me to do this, but I think it works.

No clue what I'm doing next, but if I can continue to come up with new ideas for vgm covers, you may see more from me in this style! Hopefully it won't be another 4 years.

Special thanks to @Amie Waters and @RichaadEB for mix feedback on this.
