Released by Technōs Japan in 1990, it puts you in the role of one of three special agents — each with different fighting styles — as they take on a criminal syndicate terrorizing a futuristic city. The gameplay is similar to other side-scrolling beat ’em ups like Final Fight, but with a slightly grittier, more “cyberpunk meets street gang” aesthetic.
You move from left to right through levels, punching, kicking, and throwing enemies while avoiding weapons and hazards. Unlike some other beat ’em ups, Combatribes lets you grab and throw multiple enemies at once, adding a satisfying combo element. There are also weapons scattered through the levels, like bats or pipes, which you can pick up to deal extra damage.
The visuals are bold and colorful, featuring large, detailed character sprites and cityscapes full of neon signs, cars, and street debris. Each stage ends with a boss fight, usually a huge, tough enemy with unique attack patterns. The soundtrack is energetic and full of that early-’90s arcade punch, keeping the momentum going as you fight through the gangs.
What makes Combatribes stand out is its urban setting, three-player co-op support, and over-the-top street combat, giving it a more modern, aggressive feel compared to more fantastical beat ’em ups of the time. While it never reached the legendary status of Final Fight or Streets of Rage, it’s remembered fondly by fans for its fast-paced action and slightly darker tone.
