Cow Missing | The Collapsing Bridge on the Studio Tour at Universal Studios Hollywood in 1977 #universalstudio @cowmissing | Uploaded June 2024 | Updated October 2024, 1 day ago.
A rickety wooden structure up the hill from the New York Street sets was one of the early attractions on the Studio Tour and was regularly used by trams until 2008.

1974 – 2008: The tour guide would try to navigate the tram around the bridge, but suddenly, the driver would head towards it. Just as the tram reached the midpoint, the bridge would creak, and massive timbers would fall away, causing it to drop a foot under its weight. With everyone safe, the tram would then continue as the bridge rebuilt itself for the next tram.

2008 – 2012: The tour guide would spot a red 'Hot Set' light and ask the driver to bypass the bridge. However, it would be too late. Through crackling walkie-talkies, we would hear that the pyro was ready and the exploding bridge was set to go. As the tram drove onto the bridge, there would be a burst of smoke followed by an explosion as the bridge collapsed. The tram would drop, but I made it off the bridge safely.

Added to the tour in 1974, the bridge was featured in the movie "Descent," directed by Alan Smithee, and constructed from a particular type of wood called "Hollywood." Alan Smithee is a pseudonym used by directors who wish to remove their names from a movie's credits due to professional embarrassment or creative disagreements. Films that directors were satisfied with in theaters were often cut for TV, leading to the use of the Alan Smithee credit to signal their dissatisfaction with the final product.

Hydraulic systems, controlled by a computer system originally made by Anitech, moved the bridge and various collapsing elements.

The bridge was out of action for a few years (2006-2008) but was repaired and brought back to life after Studio Tour guides suggested adding interest to the tour while the New York sets were rebuilt following the June 1, 2008 fire.

Until 2021, trams occasionally used it, especially when delays or other elements of the Studio Tour were out of action. Since 2022, the former Runaway Train has been parked on the bridge, making it inaccessible to trams.
