The Collapse of the San Francisco 49ers: the nfl's what if dynasty??
The San Francisco 49ers (25 season as of week 4, 3-1), were built to dominate the NFL. With Kyle Shanahan at the helm, a loaded roster featuring Christian McCaffrey, Deebo Samuel, Trent Williams, Nick Bosa, and Brock Purdy, and multiple deep playoff runs, the 49ers looked unstoppable.
But after years of heartbreak, blown opportunities, and another disappointing season, many are asking the same question: Has the 49ers’ Super Bowl window officially closed?
- How have they performed over the past 8 seasons (Shanahan hired in 2017)
- 2017 (6-10), no playoffs-last in division
- 2018 (4-12), no playoffs-last in division
- 2019 (13-3), won nfc championship, lost sb to KC, won division
- 2020 (6-10), no playoffs-last in division
- 2021 (10-7), made playoffs, lost conference championship to LA Rams, 3rd in division
- 2022 (13-4), made playoffs, lost nfc conference championship to PHI, won division
- 2023 (12-5), made playoffs, won nfc championship, lost sb to KC, won division
- 2024 (6-11), no playoffs, last in division
- Can they compete with the roster they have now?
- Fans questions the run defense for the past 2 years
- The pitch about this niners in 2025 is that it's a retool, or a reorganization but not a rebuild. (I’m only buying that but so much)
In this documentary, we unravel the rise and sudden collapse of the 49ers. From key injuries and draft mistakes to coaching decisions and missed championship opportunities, this is the story of how San Francisco went from contenders… to a team running out of time.
If you’re a 49ers fan, NFL fan, or just love sports history, this is a must-watch.

In this video: San Francisco 49ers, 49ers, niners gang, Brock Purdy, Dre Greenlaw, 49ers 2025 NFL Draft, NFL Draft, Nick Bosa, Mykel Williams, Kyle Shanahan, Trent Williams, christian mccaffrey, 49ers highlights, 49ers clips for edit, Jimmy Garoppolo, Trey Lance, 49ers vs chiefs, 49ers vs eagles, 49ers vs rams,
The San Francisco 49ers were the IT team of the past 5 seasons, taking us on a wild ride year after year. An annual fixture in the playoffs, a coach regarded as an offensive genius, and a defense that set the tone, bringing physically back into football. A roster full of great players on both sides of the ball, and a quarterback that fell into their lap on a cheap contract. You couldn’t tell anyone watching football that this team wouldn’t win a super bowl. But, it’s time for fans to get more realistic about the Niners future, and I’m declaring the ride is over!
The core players or young replacement guys, weren’t always high picks, George Kittle was a 5th round pick (146 selection in the 2017 draft), 2018 Fred Warner was selected in the 3rd round, 2019 Deebo Samuel was picked in the 2nd round Dre Greenlaw was a 5th round pick same year, Jauan Jennings 7th round pick in 2020, Talanoa Hufanga 5th round pick in 2021, Brock Purdy famously was the last pick of the 2022 draft, Ji'Ayir Brown 2023 3rd round pick, and Dominick Puni 3rd round pick of 2024.
Those guys making up the back bone of the team, the niners had to hit on 1st round bonafide talent, getting the big body benz players to complete the roster. Like drafting Nick Bosa, trading for Trent Williams and Christian Mccaffrey, plus drafting Brandon Aiyuk.
After reaching two Super Bowls, three conference titles, and being a perennial contender; to now on the brink of bottom feeder status, what happened to the 49ers? We will examine what led to the closing of a once very promising Super Bowl window?

The LA Chargers have a Justin Herbert Dilemma
Justin Herbert has quickly become one of the most electrifying quarterbacks in the NFL. Since being drafted by the LA Chargers in 2020, Herbert has shattered records, displayed elite talent, and given fans hope for a Super Bowl run. But is he good enough to lead the Chargers to the promised land?
Coming out of Oregon, Justin Herbert was seen as a talented but raw prospect. Critics questioned his ability to transition to the NFL. But Herbert silenced those doubts immediately. In his rookie season, he threw for an NFL rookie record 31 touchdowns and over 4,300 yards, earning him Offensive Rookie of the Year honors.
- Justin Herbert (2020): 4,336 yards, 31 TDs, 10 INTs
- Andrew Luck (2012): 4,374 yards, 23 TDs, 18 INTs
- Cam Newton (2011): 4,051 yards, 21 TDs, 17 INTs
Herberts rookie stats werent just good - they were historic. He outperformed other legendary rookies like Andrew Luck and Cam Newton, setting the stage for a bright future.
Now, lets compare Herberts numbers to other top quarterbacks in the league. Over his first three seasons, Herbert has thrown for over 14,000 yards and 94 touchdowns. Thats more than Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen, or Joe Burrow in their first three years.
- Justin Herbert: 14,089 yards, 94 TDs, 35 INTs
- Patrick Mahomes: 13,868 yards, 114 TDs, 24 INTs
- Josh Allen: 9,707 yards, 67 TDs, 31 INTs
- Joe Burrow: 11,774 yards, 82 TDs, 31 INTs
Herberts arm strength, accuracy, and ability to make plays under pressure put him in elite company. Hes not just good - hes great. But football is a team sport, and individual greatness doesnt always translate to Super Bowl rings.
The Chargers have a history of falling short in the playoffs, and Herberts career has been no exception so far. In the 2022 season, the Chargers suffered a heartbreaking playoff loss to the Jaguars despite Herberts solid performance.
Playoff Performance]
- 2022 Wild Card vs. Jaguars: 273 yards, 1 TD, 0 INTs
- 2025 Wild Card vs Texans: 242 yards, 1 TD, 4 INTs
The key question is whether Herbert can overcome the challenges that plagued former Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers: a lack of consistent coaching, injuries to key players, and an inability to close out big games.
For Herbert to win a Super Bowl, the Chargers need to address these issues. Their defense must step up, and the offensive line must protect Herbert better. In 2022, Herbert faced constant pressure, taking 38 sacks, which ranked among the top 10 in the league.
So, can Justin Herbert win a Super Bowl for the LA Chargers? The answer is yes - but it wont be easy. The talent is there, but the Chargers need to build a more complete team around him. With a strong supporting cast and the right coaching, Herbert has the tools to become a Super Bowl champion.
Justin Herbert has all the makings of a generational quarterback. The question isnt if hes good enough - its whether the Chargers can give him the support he needs to succeed. Only time will tell if Herbert can bring a Lombardi Trophy to LA, but one thing is certain: the future is bright for this young star.
