2023 saw the release of two features photographed by Rodrigo Prieto, ASC, AMC: Barbie, directed by Greta Gerwig, and Killers of the Flower Moon, which reteamed Prieto with director Martin Scorsese. For Barbie, Prieto and Gerwig chose to work with Panavision System 65 large-format spherical optics; on Killers of the Flower Moon, the cinematographer’s lens package included T Series anamorphics modified by Panavision’s Special Optics department as well as spherical VA primes. In this video, Prieto discusses working on the projects back to back, reflects on the passion for cinema shared by both directors, and shares key inspirations that helped guide his approach to each movie.
