Even in its infancy 200 years ago in Manchester, the Industrial Revolution changed everything for the humans caught up in it. The industrial revolution was – and is – literally in the air we breathe, in the food we eat, and in every other aspect of our lives. The physical changes we have made to our world have changed our social and even spiritual possibilities. Much of this change is experienced not as liberation, but as trauma; not as uplift, but as degradation. What is the proper Christian response to such trauma and degradation? Have Christians too easily given in to the technologizing of life? And is Christ, who “healed all who were sick” (Mt. 8:16), still able to heal in such a world?
