In 1969, fifteen-year-old Xi Jinping was sent to live in a cave in rural China, without electricity or running water. Today, he leads one of the most powerful countries on Earth.
But Xi’s story is really the story of modern China itself. In barely fifty years, China went from famine, rural poverty and economic isolation to megacities, high-speed rail, hundreds of millions of middle-class citizens and global dominance in industries like electric vehicles, batteries, solar power, drones and manufacturing.
And it did it through a system that doesn’t fit neatly into the categories Americans are used to: communist but deeply capitalist, authoritarian but highly experimental, dominated by the state while producing billionaires and enormous private companies.
This video follows China from Mao and the Cultural Revolution through Deng Xiaoping’s economic reforms, the manufacturing boom, the 2008 Olympics, China’s enormous construction spree and finally the rise of Xi Jinping — including the censorship, repression and growing concentration of power that have defined his rule.
China’s rise doesn’t prove that its political system is better than ours. But it does prove something much more uncomfortable: countries are capable of changing far more radically than we often imagine.
And if America wants to remain competitive, we should probably understand how China did it.
