The Chicago Symphony Orchestra plays the finale of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony at Ravinia on July 14, 2023, on the summer residency opening-night program “Turn Up the Joy: Beethoven 9 Expanded.”
Along with original English text by Tracy K. Smith, 22nd Poet Laureate of the United States, that was commissioned by Carnegie Hall in celebration of Beethoven’s 250th birthday (carnegiehall.org/Education/Programs/All-Together-A-Global-Ode-to-Joy/Texts-and-Translations/English-New-York-City), the performance featured original interludes between movements and “See Me” by Reena Esmail, an a cappella choral prelude to Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony commissioned by Marin Alsop and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra for their celebrations of the composer.
