This is the cheapest Apple Silicon Mac compatible 4TB 40Gb/s Thunderbolt 4 SSD which is also 40Gb/s USB4 that I have managed to put together for my MacBook Pro. This will work with any Apple Silicon Mac using M1 M2 M3 and M4 processors and it will work with desktop Mac computers such as the Mac Mini, Mac Studio and iMac.
Although I'm showing this Thunderbolt 4 USB4 SSD being used with an M1 Max MacBook Pro Apple Silicon laptop. It will work with most Mac computers, Windows computers, Linux computers, Chromebook laptops, Android devices etc. Because the Acasis TBU401 enclosure is USB compatible. Just make sure to format your SSD to a compatible format for whatever operating system and hardware platform you intend on using it with. If you plan on using this SSD with a number of computers and devices, maybe including Windows and Android. Then I would recommend formatting the SSD to ExFAT.
This Thunderbolt SSD is built from two parts. An Acasis TBU401 Thunderbolt 4 USB4.0 40Gb/s NVMe enclosure and a 4TB Crucial P3 Gen 3 NVMe M.2 SSD.
It's also worth mentioning that because the Crucial P3 SSD being used is Gen 3, this will use less power and run cooler than most Gen 4 SSDs. This also means that this SSD may work in instances where a Gen 4 NVMe SSD may struggle to work due to the host computer or mobile device not being able to power an enclosure with a Gen 4 NVMe SSD inside of it. This more likely to be the case when connected to USB ports on the host computer/device as opposed to being connected to Thunderbolt. As Thunderbolt, as standard, supplies more current or power than USB A or USB-C.
With this Acasis TBU401 enclosure also being 40Gb/s USB4 compatible as well as Thunderbolt 4 and Thunderbolt 3. It is likely to be used with USB-C on older Macs or Windows PCs etc. Again, the lower power draw of the NVMe Gen 3 SSD may be an advantage in those scenarios.
