For the last few years, European Goldfinches have been regular summer visitors to the garden. They can usually be found in the tops of the trees at the bottom of the garden or on the bird feeder filled with sunflower hearts.
Juvenile Goldfinches typically visit the garden in late summer. These birds are just a few weeks old. Goldfinch chicks leave the nest a little over two weeks after hatching. They continue to be fed by their parents for a further week or so. Juveniles lack the adults’ red, black and white head markings but they do have the distinctive yellow wing patch.
The collective noun for Goldfinches is a 'charm' which is a very fitting description.
