For four years the CDC's page on firearm injury said nothing at all about defensive gun use. The estimate came down in 2022 after pressure from gun control groups. In July it went back up: somewhere between 60,000 and 2.5 million times a year. The Trace called that an inflated claim.
Dakota's answer is simple. A range is not a lie. The real number lives somewhere inside it, and saying so is more honest than pretending the whole category does not exist, which is what the page did for four years.
