My friends and I thought that it would be a cool idea to adapt Plato's Allegory of The Cave into the modern world for a Philosophy Project. Transforming it into a music video for Mumford & Sons' "The Cave" seemed like an idea brought down directly from the heavens.

A further explanation of the symbols/themes in the video:
The Prisoners: In the original Allegory, the prisoners spent their whole lives in a cave, the shadows that they see are the only thing that they have known. In here, the prisoners are three teenagers who have spent all of their lives in a room absorbed in a computer; they are being fed by society's lies: consumerism, standards of perfection, advertisements. They think that what they see in the screens is the only reality that there is.
The Cave: In this adaptation, the cave is the prisoners' reality: the room that they are in, and what they see on their screens.
Shadows: They are an illusion of reality. It is what society tries to feed us. It is what we are fed by the media and what the prisoners see on their screens.
The Liberated Prisoner: It is the Philosopher= the person who seeks truth and knowledge. The liberated prisoner is able to escape from the chains of societal convention. She sees through the shadows and lies that she has been fed. She sets to discover what there is more to life.
The Fire: When the prisoner is able to see beyond the shadows of society. She sees what causes the shadows, which is the fire. The fire in this adaptation are the internet and the television, which represent only a basic part of knowledge or life. The liberated prisoner realizes that there is still more to life and decides to go outside.
The Forms: They are the constants in the life of the prisoner.
The Sun: The liberated prisoner goes outside and is blinded by all the light she sees; she unable to take all in all of the knowledge of the real world at first, but she starts to observe each part of her environment until she is consumed by the Sun's light. The Sun represents absolute knowledge, good, and truth.
The liberated prisoner runs back to the cave to tell the others about the true reality that she just discovered. She wants to bring them out of the fake life that they have lived. However, the others don't pay attention to her and cast her out. They prefer to live the rest of their lives in ignorance.
The Philosopher leaves dejected but she doesn't want to give up since she wants to spread her knowledge with everybody.
