In May 2016, veteran elephant researcher Ian Redmond was attacked without warning by a matriarch he knew well — deep in a Kenyan mountain forest. He survived. But one question stayed with him: why did Kali charge?
Since the 1980s, Redmond has studied one of Africa's most unusual elephant populations in the Mount Elgon region — savannah elephants that have adapted to forest life, now isolated by human encroachment. At night, these animals venture into ancient caves, using their tusks to chisel mineral-rich volcanic rock from the walls — slowly excavating vast underground chambers over generations. No other elephant population on Earth does this.
In search of answers, Redmond returns to find Kali — and in doing so, edges closer to unlocking one of the most extraordinary mysteries in elephant behaviour.
