This is not one of my "number" videos, those are strictly solo guitar and recorded in my studio (99% of the time). Instead, I'm happy, once in a great while, to feature some trio and other recordings, if they happened to be caught live. I don't have the time, gear and frankly motivation, to set a proper recording with multiple cameras and proper micing but when the music is good, it doesn't matter. This was taken at the University of Michigan hospital's courtyard music series on Thursday, June 4, 2026. With me are two amazing musicians, Nick Calandro on bass, who's list of who he performed is too huge list, as well as renown drummer Pete Siers who has recorded with Russel Malone as well as Diana Krall, to name just two. We played around 9 or 10 tunes, I will upload more as I find the time. This show was captured by iPhone as it was streamed to the University's site and I then downloaded the one-hour show later from Facebook so obviously the quality is poor... But I think the music is pretty decent. Of course, the beginning was cut off as they didn't hit the "record" button in time... Anyway, enjoy, comment and like. Thanks!
This tune is called "The Cat" by the great Lalo Schifrin which was written for the movie "Joy House". I remember his own orchestra version from my early childhood as it was used for some long forgotten weekly radio show, but I always remember the music! Jimmy Smith actually recorded this first, but I didn't know that till the late 80's. As I'm listening to my own playing, I can't help noticing how much it's influenced by the two prior weeks of listening to
Smokin' At The Half Note by Wes Montgomery. In politics they say, it's the economy, stupid. In jazz they should say, it's the rhythmic phrasing stupid, lol! #LaloSchifrin #thecat #kennyburrell #jimmysmith
