In today’s video, I’m sharing three incredible additions to my collection—the 1993 Topps Finest Promotional Sample cards of Nolan Ryan, Don Mattingly, and Roberto Alomar.
Before the official release of 1993 Topps Finest, Topps produced just 5,000 three-card promotional sets for hobby dealers to preview what would become one of the most influential baseball card products ever created. Each card is marked “Promotional Sample 1 of 5000” on the back, making these the very first Finest baseball cards collectors ever had the opportunity to own.
We’ll take a closer look at each card, discuss why these promotional samples are historically significant, and explore how they introduced the hobby to chromium technology, the Finest brand, and the innovations that ultimately led to Topps Chrome and Bowman Chrome. I’ll also talk about the mysterious Promotional Sample Refractors—among the rarest and most sought-after Finest cards ever produced.
