In my opinion, this is the best poem I've ever written -

The Call

She was cooking dinner for three,
Just a normal day.
The phone rang. She answered "Hello?"
"It's me," she heard him say.

"Me who?" She laughed and wiped her brow.
But there was no reply.
But the familiar tone rang a bell,
As he began to cry.

It was a shock to hear his voice.
She hadn't heard from him in years.
She could barely understand him,
As he mumbled through his tears.

Before I did this..., he continued.
I had to tell someone.
Im sitting in a cheap motel,"
he sighed. "And I'm holding a gun."

She stood speechless for a while,
Then asked "What are you planning to do?"
A million things ran through her head,
But deep inside, she knew.

"I can't take this pain anymore,
Inside of me," he said,
"I decided long ago,
That I was better off dead."

"I've been too scared to do it.
But that just made it worse.
To be alone... so cowardly...
I could deal with it at first."

Then the years got longer...
It was clear what I had to do...
But I don't want you to blame yourself
Ok? This has nothing to do with you..."

As her heart fell deep in her chest,
The phone fell to the floor.
As she sobbed, she heard him repeat,
"I can't take this anymore."

She dropped to her knees,
And thought for a bit.
"There must be some way,
to talk him out of it."

She picked up the phone,
just In time for him to say "Thank you," then, "Goodbye."
She frantically started screaming his name...
Useless... there was no reply.
