Question 1: Break in oil for XR400?
Answer: Regular Honda GN4 10w-40 will be just fine. Make sure to use an assembly lube when putting the engine back together.
Question 2: First gen Virago starter upgrades
Answer: Both of us are unfamiliar with this issue and repair. I say if there are upgrades you can do to make the starter system more robust, go for it!
Question 3: Better lean or rich?
Answer: Lean is mean and can cause damage, like burning valves and pistons etc. Running rich can foul plugs and create excess carbon. It is better to be rich than lean, however tuning should always be performed.
Question 4: 1999 Honda CB750 Nighthawk Jetting after K&N filter install
Answer: The jetting you propose (larger pilot, shim needle, bigger mains) is a perfect plan, go for it!
