Full spoiler free review of 'THE BREAK' (La Trêve) from Belgium.
The Reykjavik Review reviews as many crime series, Netflix series, Netflix originals, European crime series and just European series in general as I can find the time to do because I love good European crime writing and European crime Netflix.
Unfortunately, I wouldn't put this series in that category. Technically this is European noir, but it is also what we technically call "really awful". It is trying to be Nordic Noir, and failing so spectacularly that it is almost funny. Thankfully, you don't have to watch this Belgium crime show because there are plenty of good ones you can watch from France, England, Scotland, Sweden, Denmark and Finland; shows like Broadchurch, The Missing. Shows like The Killing, The Bridge, Trapped and shows like Unit 42, Bordertown and Follow The Money. There are even other Belgian shows like Undercover and I'm sure someone has done something better than this.
La Trêve or The Break from Belgium, in which they speak French, tries to be like all of those Nordic Noir shows and just cannot be. It is a foreign series that I would like to see ex-communicated from the others, and possibly the worst Netflix original that I've seen. The Break season 2 is even worse than the first season, which is saying a lot.
This series was created by Stéphane Bergmans, Benjamin D'aoust, Matthieu Donck and Valeria Zunzun.
It stars Tom Audenaert, Jasmina Douieb, Karim Barras and Yoann Blanc The Break was first released in 2016 and this second series is from late 2018.
