The Bouse Fisherman is one of the most mysterious ancient geoglyphs in the American Southwest.
Located near Bouse, Arizona, this massive desert intaglio was created an estimated 900–1,200 years ago by scraping away dark desert pavement to reveal lighter soil beneath. From ground level, the design is nearly impossible to recognize. From the air, a human-like figure holding what is commonly interpreted as a spear becomes visible, stretching over 100 feet long across the desert floor.
Archaeologists believe geoglyphs like the Bouse Fisherman were created by ancestors of Yuman-speaking peoples, including the Quechan and Mojave, whose cultures were closely tied to the Colorado River. Fishing was central to daily life, and many researchers interpret this figure as symbolic or ceremonial rather than practical.
These ancient ground drawings were not roads, maps, or dwellings. They are widely believed to have served ritual, spiritual, or cultural purposes, possibly intended for spiritual beings or as part of ceremonial movement across the landscape.
The Bouse Fisherman is part of a broader geoglyph tradition that includes the famous Blythe Intaglios just west of the Colorado River in California.
