Beautiful and expressionistic are the first two words that come to mind when I think about The Blue Flower. There is a quite unpretentiousness to the prose of this novel by Penelope Fitzgerald that many readers will apreciate.

In The Blue Flower, we meet Novalis as a young man, way he became Novalis the Romantic poet and was simply plain old Georg Philipp Friedrich Freiherr von Hardenberg, a young man in love in Saxony in the last decades of the 17th century. This is the story of that tragic love story.
