MBARI (Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute) | The blob sculpin wants to say hi 👋 @MBARIvideo | Uploaded April 2023 | Updated October 2024, 7 hours ago.
This curious blob sculpin, Psychrolutes phrictus, swam up to take a look at the camera on MBARI's remotely operated vehicle Doc Ricketts. As it gets closer to the camera, the red dot you see is one of two lasers mounted on the camera housing used to measure animals on the seafloor. You can also see numerous marine leeches attached to its head!

Blob sculpin can grow to about 60 centimeters (two feet) long and are shaped like large, flabby tadpoles. They eat crabs, sea pens, and other small animals that live on the seafloor.
