Augmented chords are awkward, weird, and can seem useless. It took me a while to
eventually grasp on what aug chords are capable of- as well as aug7 (or +7) chords. They're certainly a unique sounding chord, and in this lesson we go over the basics behind how the triad is built, but also how it can be used in musical settings. Depending on your knowledge of music theory, this lesson may get too advanced near the end, but it should be simple to follow for the first half at least.

This kind of solo would have blown my mind when I was younger, but after learning lots of Metallica, Megadeth, and Dream Theater solos, you start to pick up on some useful strategies and structures for making a solo. This one in particular is very influenced by Kirk Hammet, with the Wah pedal inclusion adding even more Metallica influence.
Although I dont have the same shredding skills as the legends, I can still utilize the skills I DO have and get the most out of them by planning and writing. I mainly compose by feel- and then I consult my theory to help me execute what Im feeling if it isnt happening naturally (this is usually the case). In this instance, the theory used is knowledge of several scales (Pentatonic Minor, Blues, and Minor), a few rhythmic concepts, and overall structure.

When writing in major keys, one quick method to introducing sorrow in to your music is by using the diatonic iii chord, also called the mediant chord. This video will demonstrate several examples of songs and pieces that are written using the mediant chord, as well as advice on how to write progressions that are sad and woeful.
