On June 14, 1777, the Continental Congress approved the design of a national flag for the United States.
The resolution established thirteen alternating red and white stripes and thirteen white stars on a blue field, representing the original colonies united in a new nation. More than two centuries later, the Stars and Stripes remains one of the most recognized symbols in the world.
